Maaran - Film Review

Maaran is the third consecutive OTT release for actor Dhanush after Jagame Thanthiram  and Atrangi Re. This time on Disney+Hotstar.  Sathyamurthy (Ramki) is a news reporter who is into investigative journalism. On the day his wife delivers their second child, a girl baby, Sathya is killed by his detractors while his wife deceases upon delivery. Mathimaaran brings up his sister Shweta (Smruthi Venkat) along with his uncle (Aadukalam Naren). Maaran changes job often due to his straightforward way of writing and eventually lands up  with a News channel (owned by Jayaprakash) where he gets to show his professional work and grows up the ranks while also gaining social popularity. Thara (Malavika Mohanan) is his colleague and the two build a mutual liking for each other. Pazhani (Samuthrakani) is a former Minister who is trying to get re-elected in the upcoming by-election. However, as he is unsure about his victory, he indulges in tampering with the Electronic Voting Machine (EVM). In Maar

Netrikann – Movie Review

Image
Lady Superstar Nayanthara has played a few unique characters in her career spanning 18+ years. In one of her earliest movies with Superstar Rajinikanth, her character was named “Durga” and she takes the same name in her most recent outing “Netrikann” in which she plays the role of a visually challenged person. In her earlier movie “Naanum Rowdydaan” pairing with Vijay Sethupathy, she appeared in a role who cannot hear anything. With this role, she has touched the emotions of millions of her fans with a fantastic portrayal, something very close to how a real person who cannot see the world would. Very few actors / actresses have played such a role so well, notable among them being Kamal Hassan in “Rajaparvai” and Rani Mukherjee alongside Amitabh Bachchan in the movie “Black”. Quite frankly, it is extremely difficult to “act” as though one cannot see.  Nayan has done justice to this role and has stepped up expectations on her, making the audience feel worthy of her title “Lady Superstar”

GST, Theatres & OTT

It seems like yesterday and Ajith Kumar has already completed 25 years in Tamil Cinema which is a remarkable feat, given that he never had/continues to have a blood relation who produces movies. He has almost come up on his own strength all through and he dissolved all his fan clubs many years back. He continues to maintain a dignified silence in most public issues and is neither active on social media either. So when Vivegam was announced, his fans rejoiced for it was a defining year in his career. the film opened to a thunderous box office opening although the reviews were mixed, with critics rating the film high for its finesse and sharp editing cum direction. The film did well in the theatres and continue to run a few shows sparingly. So when I noticed last week that the film was up for viewing on SunNxt app, I was quite surprised. It's abnormal that a top-hit film of one of India's highly rated Actors shows up on an OTT platform on the 50th day of its the
