Varisu - Film Review

Image
After almost a week of its release, watched Vijay’s Varisu. Went without any expectations as there has been a steady negative feedback about the film. In fact, the reviews mostly said the film was too much drama.   After coping for over 150mins, I am convinced with the popular verdict. The film is heavy on drama. But then, aren’t films meant to be that way? Will come back to this at the end of this article.  Vijay (Vijay) is sent out of his home by his father Rajendran (Sarath Kumar) as he fails to fall in line to his wishes. The family patriarch, father of three sons is yet to decide his successor of his sprawling business empire which is dominated by the mining fields and wants his sons Ajay (Shamsudern aka Sham) and Jay (Srikanth) to pitch themselves against each other. Not wanting to be a part of this rat race, Vijay relinquishes from the race. He travels around the country only to be called back home by his mother Sudha (Jayasudha).  On the occasion of Rajendran’s 60th birthday ce

The cult of Chandramukhi

The distance from Koramangala to RT Nagar in Bangalore is around 14 Kms over 25 mins at that time of the day, rather night. But the bike ride felt eternal. My skin under the full sleeves’ shirt was shivering like never before. My closest experience to something similar was during the early 1980s when I watched “My Dear Kuttichathan” at Devi Theatre in Chennai. Be it a graphically shot snake coming out of a chandelier or the evil-filled Raja Vettaiyan walking with his sticks screaming “Laka Laka Laka” or the Rajapalayam Dogs barking fiercely and of course the extraordinary eye movements of the ecstatic Chandramukhi showing off her jewels, the entire movie was a bit on the edge when I watched it for the first time on this day, 15 years back. I feel the same every time I watch this film till now – around 50+ times during the past 180 months. The scary ride was because I was returning back from PVR at Forum Mall after watching First Day Night Show and Bangalore’s lonely roads were infamous

Charlie Chaplin 2 - Movie Review

Image
Charlie Chaplin 2 released in theatres in February 2019 and on SunNxt OTT App in March 2019. Loosely termed after the prequel starring the same combo of Prabhudeva and Prabhu, CC2 is supposed to be a comedy film with a message. While the second part is somewhat achieved, the former is a joke, really. Most of the scenes are neither comical nor funny; PD perhaps thought he can bring back his humour of the 90s and fails miserably at that. His makeup is shoddy and doesn’t suit his character’s age one bit. Prabhu tries hard to be funny but ends up being funny.   Nikhi Galrani is the glamour doll of the film although carries the film well and sincerely. Adah Sharma appears briefly but has performed her scenes well. Music is a disaster overall, save for the Chinna Machan song sung by Senthil Ganesh and his wife, which were showcased on Tv and YouTube long before the film’s release and went on to become a chartbuster on Radio and Music Apps. I am not going to reveal the story of th
