Bad Boys - Ride or Die - Movie Review
In this fast paced Hollywood crime drama, Will Smith and his partner Martin Lawrence as detectives and best friends carry the entire story on their shoulders. What starts as a fun ride slowly moves in to an action packed second half, culminating in to some fiery gunshot scenes and melodrama that was completely avoidable.
The film opens in Miami city when co-detectives Lt. Mike Lowrey (Will) and Lt. Marcus Miles Burnett (Martin) are driving down the streets on the former’s Porsche Cayenne (we wonder if cops in the US can afford one!).
In an accident that is near death, Marcus is severely injured and is admitted in a hospital. He almost reaches the heaven to meet his former boss and cop Captain Conrad Howard (Joe Pantoliano) who tells him a little secret. Thereafter, we see Marcus running away from his bed only to be found standing on the roof of the building.
He informs Will that something bad is going to happen and that they both need to manage the upcoming situation and be there for each other for the sake of brotherhood.
In a news report on television, Conrad is posthumously accused of corruption, leading to various misgivings within the department. Will and Marcus vow to get their former boss’ name cleared.
They do not find much support from Rita Secada (Paola Nunez), Miami PD captain and former girlfriend of Will and now dating Adam Lockwood (Ioan Gruffood) who is running for the office of the Mayor of the city.
Will, Marcus and Rita agree that there is a rat within the department but are not clear who it is. Meanwhile, Armando Aretas (Jacob Scipo), the illegitimate son of Will who is in prison is tried to be killed, but escapes their wrath. While being moved to a safer cell in Miami (Aretas is accused of being part of the Cartel and has earlier killed Conrad), the kingpin of the Cartel James McGrath (Eric Dane), a former US Army Ranger and a DEA Agent tries to kill Aretas, Will and Marcus, but they escape though their chopper crashes.
What follows is a wild goose chase where the Miami Police Department is chasing Will & Co., while the latter is in search of McGrath and his men, as they are the real perpetrators of the drug cartel, through which they have tried to bring bad reputation to Late Conrad.
The movie moves from being friendly and humorous all the way to car chases, chopper fights and AK-47 and more exchanging clashes all over the place.
The screenplay is somewhat patchy and neither makes one get glued to their seats, not lets the audience move away, as there could be a sense of suspense that is brewing.
