Sector 36 - Movie Review

Between 2005 and 2006 at a village by the name Nithari in Noida, UP, a domestic help along with his bossman, a well-connected rich man, kidnapped kids from the nearby slums, used them for their sadistic sexual pleasures and culled them in to parts, to be thrown away in the neighbourhood drains, one by one.

The Allahabad High Court came heavily on the police and other agencies back then, for such a botched up investigation.

Sector 36 - the movie, is a loose adaptation of this civil horror, which is palatable only for a mature audience (viewer discretion suggested, especially younger children).

Prem Singh (Vikrant Massey) is a household caretaker of a farm house owned by Balbir Singh Bassi (Akash Kurana) in the outskirts of Delhi. He lures young kids passing by and kidnaps them. Once in the house, he tortures them in various forms, that is reminiscent of his troubled past. His uncle, a butcher would sexually abuse Prem, which brings him nightmares and he punishes similar aged children, though for no fault of them.

When kids in the slum identify some parts of a skeleton, police offer Ram Charan Pandey (Deepak Dobriyal) makes a mockery out of it, though he knowns that it could be a real one. In the background are several parents who reach out to him with complaints of missing kids.

During the Dassera festivities, Policeman Ram’s owned is tried being kidnapped, though he eventually rescues her. That’s when it dawns on him to begin a thorough investigation.

Ram Charan Pandey is suspended from service when he accosts Bassi for some queries. The top cop in town and a minister’s son are both classmates with Bassi.

Beyond the kidnaps and brutal murders lie a layer of organ trafficking, especially that of younger children. Ram is determined to catch the culprits along with his new boss Bhupen Salkia (Baharul Islam).

He eventually reaches out to Prem Singh’s native village, where his wife is sent a parcel regularly and one that contains loads of cash and pen drives with disturbing videos.

Once back in Delhi, Ram apprehends Prem and what goes on for an hour is the detailed account of how Prem went about doing this criminal act, which is caught on camera.

Prem and Bassi are reprimanded and punished by law. But do the wrongdoers leave Ram to live a dignified life thereafter? That forms the last part of the plot of this tragic horror movie.

The screenplay doesn’t bring out the chills as much (thankfully!) of the gruesome murders, though viewers would prefer what was on screen was bad enough.

Directed by Aditya Nimbalkar and Produced by Maddock Films and Jio studios for Netflix, the movie has been edited by Sreekar Prasad who has done absolute justice with the art of editing.

Vikrant has pretty much lived the character, true to the original brutal murderer that he was in real life. The connivance of the high and mighty at Delhi is in full glow, with cinematic liberties though much of it is relatable.
