Jewel Thief (2025) - Movie Review

A thief is a thief forever. But some thieves are special, for they steal not just for the loot, ra. ther for the “Kick” of it. Rehan is a professional “Jewel Thief” and carries the film on his shoulders all through and confirms at the end of the movie that the heist will continue.

Raja Chauhan alias Rehan (Saif Ali Khan) is in hiding in Europe when two Indian cops spot him, basis instructions from their boss Vikram Patel (Kunal Kapoor).

Rehan befriends them and voluntarily surrenders to them, as he wishes to get to India to finish an important task. The duo, bewildered about their prized catch, take him to India, only to lose him at the airport, even as Vikram arrives there..

Back in India, Rehan reaches the Alibaug bungalow of Rajan Aulakh (Jaideep Ahlawat). Rajan threatens that for Rehan’s family to be undisturbed, he must steal “The Red Sun”, a rare diamond that would be exhibited soon in Mumbai.

Rehan shares a watertight plan with Rajan to get to the diamond safely and without getting caught and bring it outside the Museum and gets on the job. Just as he is about to enter the main hall where the diamond is located, he realises that the building is filled with cops.

Meanwhile, Randeep makes a grand plan to sell the INR 500 Cr worth diamond to Anees Moosa (Loitongbam Dorendra Singh (and make mends with him, due to a past skirmish and a double cross.

Rehan manages to escape the Museum and rushes off with his partner in crime Nikki Taneja (Meenal Sahu).

The Red Sun, owned by African Prince Gamunu (Peter Muxka Manuel) is impatient with the Museum owner and decides to take the diamond back to London. Thanks to a technical issue in his private aircraft (planted by Rehan), he chooses to take a civilian airline to fly from Mumbai to London.

Rehan makes an exhaustive plan to steal the diamond mid-air and makes the pilot to make an emergency landing in Istanbul, Turkey.

However, instead of landing at the Ataturk Airport, the plane lands in a public park, from where Rehan, Rajan and Farah (Nikita Dutta) escape with the diamond.

When the diamond finally reaches the Moosa, he realises that Randeep has once again cheated him by sending him a fake one!

Rehan has double crossed Randeep and explains to him how he managed to do it. Finally, the almost two-hour movie ends and a song erupts along with the end credits where the main cast is seen randomly singing and dancing.

Jewel Thief is a bizarre attempt to make something that is commonly seen on foreign language films, especially ones which are made for Netflix or Amazon Prime. Just that it falls short of stature in not a few, but in almost all parameters.

The story is so weak and slow, that almost every scene ahead is predictable.

Saif tries his best to be at his comic best (like his films of 2000s) but fails miserably yet again. Jaideep Ahlawat has done a good job as a rough villain and brings out his best in a few places.

Nikita Dutta is almost a cameo, save for her skin show now and then and a random montage song with Saif, that breaks out of nowhere and serves no purpose either.

When I first heard the songs on Amazon Prime Music App, I thought it to be catchy and interesting. Though the songs by Sachin Jigar had almost absolutely no relevance in the movie.

Background score by Shezan Shaikh is average while cinematography by Jishnu Bhattacharjee is colourful and enjoyable at most places. The stunt scenes real life mimic college fights between second and first year students, if you get what I mean.

Wonder what Directors Kookie Gulati and Robbie Grewal were thinking when they were filming it.
