Coolie - Movie Review

The much awaited and most hyped Superstar starrer “Coolie” released worldwide on 14th August to the cheers, claps and applause of his ardent fans.

Directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, a self-claimed disciple of Actor Kamal Hassan, the film has been produced by Kalanithi Maran’s Sun Pictures. It is interesting to see Thalaivar move seamlessly from Lyca to Sun to Lyca and again to Sun. Only he can manage this politics of business and business of politics so damn well.

Coolie is all about Deva (Rajinikanth) and his childhood friend Rajasekar (Sathyaraj) who is found dead by the train tracks.

His three daughters imcluding Preethi (Shruti Hassan) are threated by Soubin (Dayal) and his men to complete certain tasks left behind by their father.

How Deva finds and fights his friend’s murderer is the rest of the plot . Upendra (Kaleesha) enters the fray one last time for old times’ sake even as Thalaivar fights his off-screen bestie Nagarjuna who dons the role of a dreaded kidnapper - Simon.

Dayaa (Aamir Khan) appears as a Cameo is a surprise entry. Watch the movie to know who he is and what he does.

Loki has given exactly what a typical Rajinni-fan wants during the 150 mins - a high dose of action well concocted with limited emotions and a good dose of humour, interspersed within the screenplay. Well done Lokesh.

Anirudh has retained his self-styled composing and BGM and at many places, one can only remember similar tunes that he has composed for Superstar all through Petta, Jailer and Vettaiyan as well as other movies for which he has composed the music.

Chikkittu Vibes goes well with the audience while the friendship song is sober and evokes a few emotions here and there in an otherwise eccentrically violent film. All other songs are either montages or forced-fits, like the foot-tapping Monica number.

The fact that Thalaivar agreed to such a subject is not surprising, even as the “1950-model” as he mentioned about himself during the music release event caters to a wide section of fans, starting from as young as 3 years, all the way up to those in their 70s.

Cameraman Satheesh has done his department well, while Stunt Masters AnbAriv have taken Superstar’s fight scenes to unimaginable levels, given that the Actor is 76 years old.

The film is said to have already clocked in over INR 250 Cr in secondary revenues and is expected to cross INR 350-400 Crores during the month of August at the Box Office.

The fact that the film is “A”-rated and has a CBFC Certification for 18 years old and above could be a dampener, though we need to wait and watch how this unfolds.

At this age, the man has given a stunning action-oriented performance. The hype and hope for Jailer 2 will now go manifold, given that the audience is finally in agreement to Thalaivar taking up such bold scripts even at his sunset years. Hats Off, as he would say often.

The two gentlemen in the backkground who moulded Sivaji Rao Gaekwad to who he is today - Ace Director SP Muthuraman and Thalaivar’s childhood friend, Raj Bahadur!

Even as the world celebrates Rajninism  with yet another FDFS movie-mania for the last 50 years, the man himself would have woken up this morning as usual before sunrise, gone for his morning walk & exercises, sipped his filter coffee and must be straddling between newspapers and his iPad, reading current affairs and connecting with the Almighty, just as he goes about like yet another day! That is Rajinikanth for you.
