Mission Majnu - Movie Review

Off late, there have been so many films about former RAW Agents and their lives. Mission Majnu is one such. Released on Netflix on 20 Jan. ahead of India’s Republic Day, the film is gaining a lot of positive response from viewers.

Taariq (Siddarth Malhotra) is a devout Muslim residing in Lahore, Pakistan and works at his uncles’ tailoring shop. He falls for Nasreen Khan (Rashmika Mandanna) at first sight, though she is vision-impaired. The two have their Nikkah solemnised by both families although her father is initially reluctant and is not pleased with Taariq as he doesn’t have a “real job”. The story moves slowly for us to understand that Taariq is indeed an undercover agent, Amandeep Singh, living in Pakistan for a few years now.

Indira Gandhi’s Government test fires Nuclear Bomb which irks Pakistan. Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto decides to build and test a Nuclear site, however without the rest of the world knowing about it. He decides to join hands with noted scientist Ayub Qader Khan and the two get going. Much to India’s surprise, work is in brisk progress even as Taariq keeps sharing real time intelligence to his RAW superiors. RN Kao (Parmeet Sethi) Head of RAW, fully trusts Aman for the job and gets him sanctions, money and mobilises ground support. In his previous life, Aman’s father is accused as a traitor, having “sold Indian intelligence” across the border and this trauma continues to be a reason for him to get abused every now and then by his boss.

Morarji Desai (played by Avijit Dutt) takes over from Indira Gandhi (played by Avantika Akerkar) and decides to call-off this spy operation as it causes a lot of money and time to the exchequer. Meanwhile, Gen. Zia ul-Haq (Ashwath Bhatt), Pakistan’s Military Head arrests the then Prime Minister for corruption and takes over the country’s administration from him. He makes a friendly call to the Indian PM Desai to gain his confidence. The Nuclear assembly continues to progress under Gen. Zia’s leadership as well.

Taariq and his RAW colleagues in disguise - Aslam Usmania (Sharib Hashmi) and Kumud Mishra (Raman Singh) finally zone in on the proposed location and reach there, to see a very large facility getting ready to test fire its missile. Intelligence with proof is sent back to India, and Morarji calls Gen. Zia to shut down the facility.

A cat-and-mouse chase continues until Taariq and Nasreen depart the country to board a flight to Dubai, where he is said to have got a job. Is Taariq apprehended by Pakistan or escapes to see another day? Watch the movie to know.

Spy movies are not just fun to watch but are also educative with their own narratives – of course, they go extremes sometimes. No doubt there is a lot of fiction and masala that gets added. Still, a large section of Indians get to know about the illustrious past, present and the future of India’s RAW.
