Masala Dosa at Hotel Palmgrove

Being the first column here, I was wondering what should I be writing about. And I couldn't think of a more fitting tribute than to give the accolades to Hotel Palmgrove. This hotel is a part of the Ballal Group which hails from the southern state of Karnataka. Started in the year 1973, Hotel Palmgrove is located in the busy commercial hub of Nungambakkam in Central Chennai. It has over 80 rooms and 9 cottages spread over an area of two acres. Palmgrove serves pure 100% vegetarian cuisine and has been a landmark location of Chennai over the past four decades, be it for a grand wedding celebration or a simple meal.

I visited this place a few days back and was surprised with the variety and fare that continues as part of its tradition. We ordered Sambar Vadai, Rasa Vadai, Poori, Masala Dosas and Ice-Cream. Of boy! That was a very heavy meal. While the pricing is a bit on the higher side, it is well compensated by the rich quality of ingredients, the friendly service and the perfect ambience, be it with a group of friends or a large family or just a couple in a quiet corner.

The Hotel sees a steady flow of visitors from across the southern states as well as rest of India, predominantly travellers who are used to, and also like the old world way of hospitality. For example, the hotel doesn't have a swimming pool, but do travellers really care while on a business trip? Also, the weather in Chennai doesn't allow you to be outdoors in the scorching sun during the day. Comfortable and Clean rooms, quick room service and tasty food is the order of the day and if that is provided, then one can expect repeat customers from time to time.

Coming back to the food on offer, there have been various others in the city who have been providing Vegetarian Fare for a long time now; a few of them have shut down in the recent years too - Woodlands Drive-in, Palimar Restaurant (both in Nungambakkam), Dasaprakash in Chetpet, Vasanta Bhavan on Mt. Road, etc. The owners of Palmgrove have been holding on to redevelopment of this iconic property. A two acre property on the main road could see a high-rise of upto 12 floors with 6 apartments in each floor with each apartment costing not less than Rs. 18,000 per sft for a 2,000 sft apartment. That's a lot of money these days, and we should appreciate that the owners have refrained from converting this iconic property yet.

So, if you are a resident of Chennai or a traveller to our wonderful city, then do drop over to this place for a taste of authentic Vegetarian Food. And don't forget to end your meal with a fresh dose of Filter Coffee, irrespective of the time of your meal. Happy Dining.
